Many women in the rural areas in Uganda have the potential to make a successful small business. A bicycle can make difference in terms of accessibility to markets and their land, fetching water, etc. Our local partner organisations are running a programme in which they work with those farmers, especially women. They discuss and define the needs: what role a bicycle can play in boosting their small business, what type of (modified) bicycle, and what additional support they need for making their business successful.  The bicycles are provided on credit.

• Target group: farmers, traders and small entrepreneurs
• Period: Since 2012
• Supported by: private donors
• Local partner organisation: BSPW, ORUDE and HOHM

Women are the backbone of society in Africa. To empower the women in rural areas around Kisozi and Butagaya our partner organisations are giving out bicycles on credit. Women in the rural villages can purchase a bicycle on loan and pay back their loan in instalments. Most women are peasant farmers and do most of the hard labour in their fields. With the bicycle they can improve the accessibility to their fields so they don’t have to carry the heavy tools, water, etc. on their head or back.

• Target group: women (farmers and small entrepreneurs)
• Period: 2008 – 2010
• Supported by: private donors + I-CE + NCDO
• Local partner organisation: FABIO, HAU and BSPW

Because peace is finally setting in the Katakwi district, bicycles are a useful tool for people to make a living. The bicycle improves people’s mobility and improves the social-economical position of families. It opens up new income generating opportunities, enables people to transport more products to the market, improves access to medical and educational facilities, opens up opportunities to diversify sources of income and improves social participation.
• Target group: women in former war zone
• Period: 2006 – 2008
• Supported by: private donors + Lion’s Club Nijmegen
• Co-financers: Wilde Ganzen/NCDO + Cordaid
• Local partner organisation: FABIO
