2012-05 trainings bicycle mechanics uganda2

The third and final group of bicycle mechanics in the Bike4Care project was trained early June. The need for professional mechanics in Kumi becomes apparent from an example of local practice regarding the use of spokes. In this area, local mechanics are used to assemble the rear wheel exactly the same way a front wheel is done. The consequence is protruding spokes that are chipped off, with the effect that the protruding spoke and sharp cuttings end up piercing the tube, so the cyclist has to make frequent visits to the mechanic and spend on replacement of tubes. In each of two villages five mechanics are now capacitated to fix bicycles. This will provide them with an income and also benefit the more than 100 health workers who will be equipped with bicycles in the next months.
