Nick Abreu, a student from Harvard University, did research on how a bicycle can make a difference in accessing health care. Diseases such as malaria are very common in Africa, even though medicines and preventive measures such as mosquito nets are available. People literally just don’t have access to these. Nick analysed that there are 2 ways in which a bicycle can help: transporting patients to a health centre can improve by e.g. a bicycle ambulance, and transporting medical staff making house calls and visits in the communities can improve by providing them with bicycles equipped with basic health supplies. The bicycle can be the missing link in getting access to proper health care, and therefore reduce the prevalence rate of diseases like malaria. In the video Nick describes what his research is about. The findings are used for the Bike4Care projects in Kenya en Uganda.
